Pneumococcal Vaccination

Pneumococcal disease is caused by a bacteria known as Streptococcus pneumoniae. It is an important cause of vaccine-preventable illness and death in developed countries. It is estimated that almost one million children die of pneumococcal disease every year worldwide and elderly people also experience relatively high rates of invasive pneumococcal disease involving blood and brain. Globally, close to 900,000 adults die from pneumococcal disease every year. There is also the problem of growing resistance of Streptococcus pneumonia to antibiotics.

Contraindication

  • Individual having fever
  • Hypersensitive to common drugs
  • concurrent XRT
  • caution if immunocompromised
  • caution if acute illness
  • caution if chronic CSF leakage

Side Effects

  • Redness, soreness, swelling, or itching at the site of the injection, fever and tiredness.
  • Headache.

 

Like all pneumococcal vaccines, vaccine is being closely monitored for unusual or severe problems.
